For every shooter or platform game, there's a block puzzle game too. This isn't a problem as these puzzlers tend to be easy to pick up and play, while being a decent challenge for our poor brains (speaking for myself anyhow). A challenge is what the brain craves and gaming is what the thumbs need, so why not mix them? Rubik's Cube did it, Tetris did it and now QBlox is having a go.
QBlox puts you in control of a stone block. The aim of the game is to manoeuvre the block through the various paths and slot it into the hole at the end. Sounds easy huh? Well, the platforms are floating in mid air and any wrong move can send the block plummeting through the clouds. Also, the platforms come in various shapes, with many treacherous pathways and obstacles.
The grid is divided into many mini squares. Your block takes up one square while standing vertically and two squares while laying horizontally. This limits your movement meaning you have to strategically plan your moves and positions if you want to move safely down narrow pathways and reach the finish slot.
Naturally the game eases you in and slowly introduces the obstacles one by one, but before you know it they're mixed into one level to increase the challenge and confuse the brain more. Along the way you'll encounter unstable platforms (which break if the block stands on them vertically), switches that open up new paths, various narrow bridges and even teleports. Each one is there to help you or hate you, but one thing is certain - mess up, you start again! You'll learn the obstacles the hard way as there are no tutorials to teach you the wrongs and rights of the board, forcing you into some trial and error game play. Still, when you've learnt, you won't purposely make the same mistake twice.
As the levels progress, you'll be fascinated to know what the game has in store for you. Although each level is a joy to play, you'll find some levels far easier than others, so don't worry about a progressive difficulty. When you become accustomed to controlling the block, you'll fly through certain levels. With 80 levels you can expect a certain amount of repetition, but this is par for the course in a game of this type. Although this won't really be an issue for most people because each level is a satisfying and fun experience.
Graphically the game looks lush. It's a cross between 'fantasy' and those strange optical illusion drawings we've all looked at in wonder (you know the ones I mean). Although QBlox will never find the same success that Rubik's Cube and Tetris has, it's certainly a great game that is sure to have you entertained and challenged at the same time. With the brain and thumbs satisfied, what's for dinner?
Positives:
+ Lush Graphics
+ Challenging and fun game play
+ 80 levels to work through
Negatives:
- Lack of tutorials force trial and error game play
- Perhaps a little repetitive for some people
