Sony Ericsson has been

voted as the winner of the Member of the Year category of the Java

Community Process (JCP) Program's Annual Awards. The announcement was

made by the JCP Program Management Office at an awards ceremony held

last night during the JavaOne Conference.

The JCP Program held its 4th annual JCP Program Community Event

where awards in five different categories were revealed. The

nominations had been made by the Executive Committees (ECs), and the

winner in each category determined by Executive Committee vote.

The JCP Member of the Year award recognizes the corporate or

individual member who has made the most significant positive impact

on the community in the past year. Leadership, investment in the

community, and innovation were some of the qualities that EC Members

were looking for in voting for this award. The runners up for the

Member of the Year award were JBoss, NTT DoCoMo, and Sun

Microsystems.

Sony Ericsson is an active, voting member of the Java(TM) ME (Micro

Edition) EC, participating in the evolution of mobile Java technology

through the JCP Program. The JCP ECs guide the development of and

approve new Java Specification Requests (JSRs). The Java ME EC is a

group of members of the Java community guiding the development of

Java technology on mobile devices and representing a cross-section of

major stakeholders, including Sony Ericsson. Through the Java ME EC,

Sony Ericsson has been working to ensure an open, well-managed Java

community. Its clear mission is to ensure optimal progress of Java

technology in mobile phones and to maximize the usage and

interoperability of Java technology based applications on mobile

phones.

"I am very pleased with the selections by the Executive Committee

members and the well-deserved recognition these give to top

contributions in the Java community. Sony Ericsson is one of this

year's best examples of how standards development and innovation work

hand in hand to advance Java technology" says Onno Kluyt, senior

director, JCP Program at Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Chair of the JCP.

Sony Ericsson's representative on the Java ME Executive Committee,

Hanz Häger, was at the event at The Argent Hotel in San Francisco and

accepted the award. Hanz has been part of the Java(TM) Technology for

the Wireless Industry (JTWI), JSR 185 expert group and he now

participates in the Mobile Service Architecture (MSA), JSR 248/249

expert group. He has also been involved in Sony Ericsson's efforts to

start the Unified Testing Initiative and associated Java Verified

testing program, which provides a framework for testing Java

applications in the mobile space, and participates in the ongoing

steering group for that effort. Sony Ericsson has also been one of

the most aggressive advocates of Mobile Java 3D with Mobile 3D

Graphics (JSR 184) now implemented in more than 30 of its phones and

its Sony Ericsson Developer World program recognized as the leading

technical resource in Mobile Java 3D.

"The JCP Program Member of the Year award clearly shows that the

community thinks that Sony Ericsson is an important player and that

our contribution in the Java ME ecosystem has been successful and is

highly valued. We are proud to win the JCP Member of the Year award

and will do our best to live up to industry expectations also in the

future and, together with other players in the community, work hard

to make Java in mobile devices even more powerful," Hanz Häger says.

Hanz pays special attention to what will help Java developers, and he

is enthusiastic about reducing fragmentation in the Java ME industry."Sony Ericsson's strategy to build backwards compatible Java

platforms, aligned with the industry standard, is one of our

contributions to reduce fragmentation. The fact that we focus on

quality and performance is also a way for us to make sure we have a

very attractive offering to developers, confirmed by active and very

positive Community members and Premier Partners of Sony Ericsson

Developer World," says Hanz.
