Morpheme makes its Mark:

Revolutionary benchmarking application, MorphMark, to establish a standard

platform for J2ME device performance testing.

Morpheme today announced

MorphMarkd, their proprietary benchmarking software application which tests

Java enabled handsets abilities to run games.

Morphmark

was created in-house by Morpheme to determine which mobile phones would be best

suited to running the games they were developing. It soon became apparent that

the information supplied the by revolutionary piece of software would also be

useful to other companies with an interest in the mobile phone market.

Matt Spall, co-founder and managing director of Morpheme commented, "MorphMark

was developed in-house for our own purposes, being a game developer, it's crucial

that we know which phones can run games well. MorphMark tells us quickly and

accurately.".

Spall continued, "In demonstrating our games we've also shown MorphMark

and been pleasantly surprised by the reaction we've got. Several companies are

now talking to us about using MorphMark under license or alternatively, commissioning

us to run tests for them, which is an interesting new dimension to our existing

business. It's early days but with MorphMark we're confident that we can establish

a standard platform for J2ME device performance testing.

Games have become increasingly important as content for both handset manufacturers

and operators as seen with the launch of Nokia's N-Gage, a mobile phone specifically

designed to play games.

The MorphMark suite performs a number of tests in the following categories

- Java Virtual Machine performance

- Graphics performance

- Java Record Store performance

- Java IO performance

Within each category a number of tests are performed.

For each category, the software then analyses the results, and rates the phone

with a score of 1000 being of a similar performance to a Nokia 7650, and a score

of 500 being approximately half the erformance.

For example, in the Java virtual machine tests, the Nokia 3510i scores around

300, showing that for basic Java operations, it has less than half the performance

of a Nokia 7650, however, this is redeemed by its score in the graphic tests,

where it rates at 1100, slightly better than a 7650.

Morpheme will use Morphmark to carry out in-house tests on behalf of customers

including operators, platform providers and distributors or license the software

to interested parties
